Our Story: From Humble Beginnings to God’s Faithfulness

1948

During the turbulent 1950s, a young woman encountered Christ through the ministry of missionaries from the Bible Institute in Kalk Bay, Cape Town.

1950

Soon after her conversion, Hester Mavis Clarence witnessed the rebirth of her husband, Richard “Dickie” Clarence. Their devotion and obedience to God’s call laid the foundation for what we celebrate today. They began with a simple Bible study in Kalk Bay. During one open-air service, Pietie Schouw was drawn by the Holy Spirit out of a cinema queue—he later became a pillar of the work and a champion for Sunday school ministry.

1961

Seventeen believers started a fellowship in Steenberg, led by Brother R. Clarence. The first members included Richard and Hester Clarence, Pietie and Gertie Schouw, Henry and Frances Wilkinson, John and Alima Fredericks, William & Mac Adonis, Abe Adonis, Evelyn Doris Weber, Jackie Kalan, Choto and Violet Kalan, John Fortune, and Enid Wyngaard. Meetings began in homes before moving to a larger hall on Cradock Road and Concert Boulevard, Retreat.

1964

The first tent crusade was held on the De Lux soccer field with Evangelist Barney Smit. Soon after, the hall on Cradock Road became available and became home to Sharon Church (name proposed by Willie Adonis). Sharon joined the Assemblies of God Association, introduced by the Valentine Brothers and Evangelist Attie Prins. Growth continued through powerful tent crusades featuring evangelists like Andrew Valentine, Frank Weber, Andre Coetzee, Attie Prins, and Harold Prince. The property in Peter Charles Street was purchased from the municipality for just R2.00!

1976 and Beyond

After a tent crusade in Vrygrond, a wood-and-iron structure was erected. Brother John Fredericks secured the land from “The Ranger.” From there, the ministry expanded into Portland, Mitchells Plain, Valhalla Park, Hanover Park, and Delft. We honor the late Pastor Clarence and leaders for acquiring church properties, and thank Pastor Peter Clarence for securing properties in Leiden, Delft.

From 1961 to today—over 60 years—God has been faithful!
“Hitherto the Lord has brought us, and we are confident He will take us to new and elevated dimensions.”
